Flash Memoir
My parents are people who have helped out in the communities for years. I can remember me and sibling going out to helping the homeless. When asking about why we are helping out my dad told me something to this day I have never forgotten it is that not all people come from the same background and you will never know their story until they tell you.
The start of my story begins when I’m eighteen and in my final year of high school. I am working on my community service hours so I can graduate. I am working on my hours at a church in the middle of Tampa. It was known to be a rough area until the church by the name of Deeper life Christian Church they do what they call outreach where they would feed the homeless and help out the community, give out clothes, and help out in the community. I had been working as a server in the soup kitchen they run their and was passing out food. I had noticed that it was always packed no matter what day it was. When I had asked why it was so crowded every day, the women by the name of Sandra.
In the kitchen cleaning up after dinner-
(Me) Why is it so crowded it was like a madhouse out there.
(Sandra) Very simple a lot of them lost their jobs or they just come from bad situation that they can’t help.
(Me) What type of situations.
(Sandra) drugs and or bad relationships.
(Me) I see.
What made it so sad was that when the housing market had all but collapsed in 2008 a lot of people lost jobs and it led to increase in rent for not just Tampa but all of Florida. I have also learned that the totally population of homeless is about 1,549 this number has actually increased over the years as had the totally population of Tampa and the surrounding areas.
Circumstance and that of the others had a very big impact on my life and how I looked at the world. When I talked to my father who has worked for non-profit organizations and for the government, he knows that some of the money that supposed to be used to work on redevelopment and housing are being used for other things.
